 – Sir Walter Scott

This month I wanted to share something different with you…

“The Magic Word” –  Attitude.

The older I get, the more experiences I have, the more I discover the power of attitude – it determines everything we do and who we become.

Attitude is everything. Moreover, by altering our attitude, we alter our lives.

However, what is attitude?

Attitude can be defined as your thoughts, feelings, and actions towards a situation, person or group of people and will determine your relationship with that situation, person or group of people.

We know that successful people come in all shapes and sizes. They may be tall, thin, fat, bald, or any combination in between but they all have one thing in common – they expect success and they get it.

You see, successful people, those who enjoy life, are not people without problems. They are simply people who have learned to handle their problems by embracing positive attitudes.

People with satisfactory results in their lives are to be complimented on their positive attitudes. These people should be very aware, however, that to improve further, they must be open to change, and possess an attitude that is open to new ideas. We must always be learning.

As of this moment, you must stop minimizing what you can accomplish and stop believing others have something that you do not. Moreover, you must be careful not to let an incomplete set of facts or observations determine your attitude towards a situation or person.

Remember our attitude is something we can control. We establish our attitude each morning when we start our day, so make it a GREAT ONE and EXPECT the BEST.

Five Important Questions https://www.normlang.com/five-important-questions/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 16:15:42 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=323 “If the nobility in your family has to start with you, then there are some things you need to do for yourself and your family” Jim Ruta

In working with hundreds of families over the last 24 years, I have discovered that there are 5 top needs or concerns every family has, you’re no different. To answer these concerns, I have put together Specific Packages for Families. Family needs are very similar in type, it is just the numbers are different.

The 5 questions every Canadian has to deal with if they want to be comfortable financially are – What do you want to happen when…

1. You are laid up in hospital and need emergency medical treatment?
2. You get cancer, a stroke, a heart attack or another dread disease?
3. You retire?
4. You can no longer take care of yourself?
5. You die? Who will take care of the responsibilities you leave behind?

Will your family be able to handle the personal and financial stress and strain?

We all need good answers to these 5 important financial questions.

We also need plans to back them up or we risk disaster in our lives when we can least afford it.

We’ve developed a new and innovative “Ideal Financial Security Portfolio” to Lifestyle Protection. This new twist on a traditional financial tool has real appeal because it takes away the pain of estate planning and financial planners. Personal financial planning is simpler and easier than you may think. You only have to know the shortcuts and take them before it’s too late.

My job is to get you the information you need to make the decisions you have to make to get the results you want.

To do this, we believe in the “Ideal Financial Security Portfolio for Families” because it simply eliminates the 5 family income and net worth continuation concerns most families experience after retirement, illness, disability, and death. It protects your greatest asset.

It’s all about You and Your Family. If you love and care about your family and building your legacy? … I can help.

We can’t eliminate “Health Problems” however we can minimize the “Financial Impact.”

Why not be confident that you will have what you need financially exactly when you need it most.

Has anybody reviewed your insurance portfolio lately?

I can.  When I do, you can be sure you’ll “guarantee your lifestyle”.

Because Your Family Is Everything … I’m Norm Lang and for twenty-four years I have been helping breadwinners, business owners and professionals protect their families lifestyle from the ravages of “Financial Threats”.

It has been my experience that some clients would prefer not to give blood, go into a detailed medical history or have doctors and other health care professionals involved.

Such things as Foreign Travel, High-Risk Occupations, Marijuana Use, Previous Declines, Family History, Alcohol Consumption, Past Bankruptcies, Non-Aggressive Cancers just to name a few, can prevent you from protecting your loved ones.

If you or someone you know would like to get life insurance and are uneasy about past history or medical issues, give me a call. We will do our best to get the coverage you want that fits your budget.

The Ideal Financial Security Portfolio for Families https://www.normlang.com/the-ideal-financial-security-portfolio-for-families/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 16:04:57 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=317 Protecting your family’s lifestyle and their financial future is simpler and easier than you may think. You only have to know the shortcuts and take them before it’s too late.

We created “The Ideal Financial Security Portfolio for Families” for this purpose. It includes the eight critical components for your family’s financial security.

Compare your family’s protection plan to our recommended “Ideal Portfolio”.

It’s really not that complicated, so…

If money were no object every family would be sure to stock up on all the financial security they could get. Here is what we recommend in that case.

1. A Will and Powers of Attorney

Know a dysfunctional family? Sadly, these may be the people who will be fighting over you and your stuff unless you make your choices legal today. Decide in advance and be sure your wishes are respected and your family knows the ground rules. Keep peace in the family for generations when you decide in writing with a Will.

2. Life Insurance

Your family’s financial security can change drastically in a heartbeat unless you’ve protected them. Life insurance totalling ten to twelve times your income plus your debts often does the job. (The maximum coverage is about 30 times income. Are you getting your share?) Your price depends on the length of time you need it.

3. Critical Illness Protection

When you get a tough health diagnosis, you’ll be relieved you thought about this. Protect your hard earned assets and still have the money you want to convalesce in peace. Covering three years worth of your gross expenses is a great start. Protect yourself from a loss of dignity and independence as you age and can no longer take care of yourself.

4. Income Replacement Insurance

When you are sick or injured and can’t earn an income, how will you and your family survive? Replace approximately 60% of your income (to a maximum) paid to you monthly. Guarantee paycheques. Consider topping up your group benefit or get a personal plan today.

5. Insuring the Ones You Love – Spouse & Children

What impact would grieving the loss of a spouse or child have on your long term lifestyle?

How long would it take you & your family to adjust to the loss of a spouse or a child?

You can recover even when terrible things happen. Life & critical illness insurance on all family members can literally save your family from destruction and financial ruin.

6. Savings

Disciplined saving is more important long term than investment strategies. What’s your savings strategy? One way is to live on 80% of your net, donate 10% to charity and save 10% for the future. Set up a saving plan for an Emergency Fund, Tax Free Savings Account and RRSP.

7. Canadian/Foreign Travel Insurance

All provincial medical plans are not the same.

You can as easily be stranded across the country as across the border.

8. Your Affairs in Order Booklet & Emergency Relief Vault

Organize and keep records of your personal and financial affairs in a safe place.

Our “Emergency Relief Vault” is perfect. Spend a little time now and save a lot of anguish, time and money later. This is the most unselfish element of estate planning you can do for the people you love.

We have found that this common sense approach to “Primary Practical Financial Care” will maximize your peace of mind so you can get on with the day-to-day realities of life and not wonder what would happen “if”.

Ask yourself – Are you prepared for what it is you want for your family?

Call me and I will walk you through this “8 Point Portfolio”. I guarantee you will be glad you did.

The Bottom Line… Who are we Kidding?

This “Stuff” Doesn’t Matter – Until it Matters – Then it Matters a Lot.

Because Your Family Is Everything… I’m Norm Lang and for twenty-three years I have been helping breadwinners, business owners and professionals protect their families lifestyle from the ravages of “Financial Threats”.

Helping You Think Better About Your Money https://www.normlang.com/helping-you-think-better-about-your-money/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 15:59:50 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=313 Most people need money in the bank – before they need financial planning.

Jim Ruta’s

World’s Shortest Financial Planning Course

  1. Accumulate money the old fashioned way… SAVE IT UP…Learn to live on 80% of your Net Income…keep 20% in reserve. So many of us get involved in living on cash flow…where your monthly income covers payments on purchases rather than paying for purchases. The upshot of this losing strategy is that many end up living on about 120% of their net income. Once in this “program” people can escape but the most frequent incentives end up being heart attack, bankruptcy and divorce. Believe me there are some lessons you don’t have to learn yourself…and this is one of them.
  2. If your gross habits exceed your net income your upkeep will be your downfall…Save the money you spend to impress yourself. Buying things just to make yourself feel better has it’s compensations to be sure but the bitterness of having no money lingers long after the sweetness of having “stuff” is forgotten.
  3. Success in investing has never been and never will be about rate of return. It has always been and always will be about the personal discipline of putting money away. The propaganda we see every day about investment options is all interesting just not very important if you don’t put any money away. Remember, the only way to make compound interest work for you is to have money for compound interest to work on.
  4. Remember that “peace of mind equals quality of life.” In choosing your investments and options keep this stunningly simple idea in mind. Being able to sleep soundly at night can never be overvalued.

With the average RRSP account in the $50,000 range and emergency funds nearly non existent most Canadians need smart savings strategies more than they need investment planning.

This years RRSP season is quickly coming to an end. Give me a call to open up a new account or to top up your existing portfolio.

The ultimate advantage of my services consists of helping you sleep well, while achieving your goals.

I’m not here to make you rich – I’m here to help you not be poor.

Family Emergency Funding Strategies… https://www.normlang.com/family-emergency-funding-strategies/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 15:48:32 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=310 There are many possible emergency needs a family can experience.  From my experience, these are the major ones most people consider.  Your situation may require secondary care.

“Pay Cheque Protection” – By using a carefully selected amount of income replacement insurance, critical illness insurance, and life insurance, you can prevent most of the financial threats that can take away your lifestyle. You can be sure that for a given set of circumstances, you and/or your family will continue to get the pay cheques you’re used to. There are packages for everyone and every income level.  It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg either.  It can make the difference between a dream and a nightmare lifestyle.  I can show you how to coordinate your coverages with work, business, and government benefits. It’s simple and easy to do.

“Mortgage and Debt Cancellation Insurance” – Using similar products, you can make sure that no debt you incur lasts any longer than you or your good health does.  You don’t have to saddle the family or yourself with debts when the cash stops.  Cancel them.

“Cancer, Heart Attack and Stroke Insurance” – No one wants to talk about it but it happens to someone you know or know of almost every day.  You can protect yourself from this financial threat and put tax-free cash into your bank account just 30 days after the doctor makes the call. OK, it doesn’t make you better but it will take away the second biggest worry you’ll ever have.

“Final Expenses Insurance” – People buy it every day off TV ads.  It’s life insurance.  There’s a reason the companies can afford the expensive TV spots.  It’s expensive insurance.  It’s also often bought by well meaning but desperate people.  You can prevent yourself from ever getting into that predicament by taking care of the need today.  You’ll save money and rest easy immediately.

Has anybody reviewed your insurance portfolio lately?

I can.  When I do, you can be sure you’ll “guarantee your lifestyle”.

Preparing for the Unexpected… https://www.normlang.com/preparing-for-the-unexpected/ Tue, 08 Aug 2017 15:37:16 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=307 What expenses do you want to stop worrying about while you recover?

No one expects a Life Altering Illness… yet one can affect any of us, anytime.  Often, it happens when we can least afford it.  Critical Illness Insurance is a lifestyle protection product that gives you the time to recover without financial stress, the money to get the best possible medical care and the resources to protect your hard earned nest egg. It’s a personal financial security decision.

“You need this insurance not because you’re going to die,
but because you’re going to live”

Dr. Marius Barnard Brother to Heart Transplant Pioneer, Dr. Christian Barnard and Creator of Critical Illness Insurance.

So, if you were recovering from a serious illness that kept you away from your income and/or required you to change your life and lifestyle:

What expenses would you prefer not to pay out of savings or borrow to pay?

How long would you like to be insulated from that expense?

IMAGINE: Thirty days ago you were diagnosed with a not-so-common form of cancer. You are not working; the alternative treatment in the U.S. will cost $97,000; the mortgage payment is due again.

Then an insurance company hands you $250,000.

While your doctors say your chances of a cure are good, the weeks and months of treatment and recovery you’ll need can come at a high price. Not the surgery or the hospital stay. Not the radiation treatments. Not even the chemo (if they give it to you in the hospital). Those costs are generally covered by your provincial health insurance. But if your spouse has to take several months off work to look after you when you get home, or you’ve been prescribed expensive drugs that provincial health insurance doesn’t cover, or you need months of physiotherapy – you’re on your own.

Where will the money come from? You could raid your savings, run up your credit cards or even borrow against the value of your home – all of which have the potential to derail your plans for retirement. Or critical illness insurance coverage can help leave your retirement plans on track.

Will you suffer a critical illness?

You could. The Canadian Cancer Society says 40% of Canadian women and 45% of Canadian men will develop cancer during their lifetimes, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation estimates there are more than 70,000 heart attacks and 50,000 strokes in Canada each year.

There is good news, however. More Canadians than ever are surviving life-altering illnesses. Some more stats:

  • There are close to 1 million cancer survivors in Canada today, according to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
  • 80% of heart attack victims and 75% of stroke victims admitted to hospital survive, says the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The odds are that you or someone in your family will experience a serious medical setback at some point – and survive. But while you’re dealing with your illness, your finances could be suffering, too. For example, research by the Canadian Breast Cancer Network found that 44% of Canadians surveyed with cancer depleted their savings and retirement funds to cover treatment costs and make up for lost income.

How does critical illness insurance work?

If you’re diagnosed with one of the conditions covered under your critical illness insurance policy, after the required waiting period you’ll receive a lump-sum, tax-free payment once your claim is approved. You can use that money for whatever you want.

Wise financial planning takes into consideration not only building your savings but also protecting it. I can help you to determine how critical illness insurance can support your overall financial plan.

What’s in your Reserve? https://www.normlang.com/whats-in-your-reserve/ Mon, 07 Aug 2017 20:27:22 +0000 https://www.normlang.com/?p=295 I would like to share one idea with you today

As a primary financial care advisor, I have had many reminders of the importance of what I do and one of them is a reminder of how life can change in an instant.

Let’s be a little interactive.

For example, tell me what you did when you got up this morning?

(Prospect) I went to the bathroom, shaved or brushed my teeth etc… got dressed, had breakfast…

(Norm) Ok, now tell me what would happen if tomorrow morning you could not do that?

(Prospect) My spouse would do it.

(Norm) Could they do it every day? Are they always home? Mr/ Mrs prospect, you would be fine if you have someone and enough money to get you back to taking care of yourself. However, the reality is that we must be in a position to have the resources to do it.

I need to ask you a question.

If today is the day that you needed a lot of money for a sickness, an accident or because someone died and we may have to replace their income.

Would there be enough in your reserve to take care of it?

Is there enough money there today, to continue living at the same level that you are living today?

This reserve has to pay for your mortgage, food, clothing, phone, cars, insurances, kid’s expenses, etc.

If the reserve had to pay for all these things?

How long would the reserve last?

We make promises and want certain things for our families, let’s make sure we can keep them by creating and paying for our own reserve first.
